Blue forests partners
Our blue forests partners are working with us to help local communities link the conservation of mangrove, seagrass and coastal wetland habitats with international carbon markets.
University of Antananarivo's Department of Water and Forests in the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (ESSA)
The University of Antananarivo's Department of Water and Forests in the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (Département des Eaux et Forêts de l'Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques - ESSA) partners with Blue Ventures to collect and analyse data associated with the Madagascar's vast and variable mangrove forests.
University of Toliara's Institute of Fishery and Marine Sciences (IHSM)
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has supported the development of the Blue Ventures' blue forests work at several sites along Madagascar's western coast since 2012, enabling us to collect, process and analyse the scientific measurements needed to assess the feasibility of mangrove carbon financing and other payments for ecosystem services.
The Darwin Initiative, run the the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), assists countries that are rich in biodiversity but poor in financial resources to meet their biodiversity protection objectives. Darwin is supporting our work developing sustainable financing mechanisms to conserve mangrove biodiversity and alleviate poverty in Madagascar.
Integrated Remote Sensing Studio (IRSS) at the University of British Colombia
The Integrated Remote Sensing Studio (IRSS) at the University of British Colombia's Faculty of Forestry is one of the leading remote sensing labs in Canada. It researches the use of remote sensing and geospatial information for forest productivity and conservation. Blue Ventures has been partnered with the IRSS since 2013, from where Dr Trevor Gareth Jones manages blue carbon science and oversees all things geospatial for Blue Ventures.
Google Earth, Explore the Ocean
Mission Blue are the curators of the Explore the Ocean layer, a collection of ocean-related stories viewable through Google Earth. Through our partnership with Mission Blue, Blue Ventures have now contributed over 20 bilingual stories to the Explore the Ocean layer. Thanks to the support of Google, all stories in the Explore the Ocean layer can be navigated to, for free, using Google Earth.

Madagascar's Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) REDD+ group
Madagascar's Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) REDD+ group has been established to assist with Madagascar's REDD+ readiness process. We are contributing our data and research to the MRV group in order to ensure that Madagascar's mangroves are fairly recognised in the emerging national REDD+ framework.
Planet Action is a non-profit initiatve supporting projects related to climate change issues by providing geographic information, earth observation images and expertise. Planet Action and their affiliates have been supporting Blue Ventures through generous software and satellite imagery grants since 2012.
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)
Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA)
The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) is dedicated to promoting the educational, scientific and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences, with an emphasis on sustaining the use and conservation of marine resources. WIOMSA funding was instrumental in helping to establish our blue forests programme in 2011-2012.
National Centre for Oceanographic Research
Established in 1977, the National Centre for Oceanographic Research (Centre National de Recherche Océanographique - CNRO), based on the island of Nosy Be, is one of Madagscar's leading marine research facilities. CNRO has been providing expertise and support to our blue forests programme since 2013.
