Blue Ventures Expeditions honoured as finalist in the British Youth Travel Awards

25 November 2011, London. Marine Expeditions organisation Blue Ventures has been selected as a finalist in the Green Tourism Award at the British Youth Travel Awards.

Since 2003, Blue Ventures has pioneered new models of environmentally and culturally responsible tourism in Madagascar, Malaysia and Belize - an approach that has resulted in the distribution of growing economic and environmental benefits for local communities, including the creation of the Madagascar's largest network of marine reserves.

"Blue Ventures is firmly committed to demonstrating the enormous power of green tourism," said Richard Nimmo, Managing Director of Blue Ventures Expeditions. "By showing the tremendously positive impact that tourism can have, we are challenging the traditional model of mass-market tourism. All too often this causes considerable harm to cultures and habitats in some of the world's most vulnerable regions."

Blue Ventures has been an active ambassador of the growing green and responsible travel sector, advocating the leading role this industry must play in empowering local communities to benefit from tourism at a grassroots level.

The winners in each category will be announced on 8th December 2011. To find out more about the British Youth Travel Awards please click here.

Editors notes:

Blue Ventures is an award-winning marine conservation organisation dedicated to conservation, education and sustainable development in tropical coastal communities. Through our marine expeditions, volunteers from around the world join us on career breaks, student gap years and internships, working closely with our field research teams, in partnership with local communities.

Blue Ventures' projects are focused in environmentally and culturally sensitive regions of the world. All project visitors are required to be aware that we are privileged guests in our host countries, towns and villages. We insist that all team members, acting as ambassadors to Blue Ventures, adapt their behaviour to recognise local cultural sensitivities. We have a responsibility to minimise negative impacts on local environments and communities where we work, as well as to provide tangible benefits to our host communities.
