We are committed to developing new approaches for safeguarding threatened marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest coastal communities. Our strategy focuses on identifying innovative incentive-based models that can be taken to scale by communities and partners worldwide.

By investing in our marine innovation lab, you are making a critical contribution to moving our work to the next level, enabling us to expand our impact by pioneering and driving the adoption of new approaches for locally led marine conservation worldwide.

As a non-profit social enterprise, we harness your support to develop effective models for catalysing and financing coastal protection. We work to grow - rather than simply spend - your investment in Blue Ventures.

MyDonate

Join us in conserving more marine biodiversity and supporting more communities by making a donation to our field-based innovations across the tropical developing world.

If you are based in the United Kingdom then you can also donate by texting "BLUE20" and the amount you wish to give to 70070 (JustTextGiving by Vodafone), for example, "BLUE20 £20". Both this and BT's MyDonate are free services, which means that every penny you give goes towards supporting our conservation innovations.

You can also support our school scholarships fund, which provides young people from our partner communities with the educational opportunities they need to develop their skills and become the conservation leaders of tomorrow.

True to our mission

Pirogue race with Vezo aho sailAs a field-based conservation organisation and British registered charity (number 1098893), 92% of our spending is channelled directly to charitable activities, supporting our conservation programmes across the tropical developing world.

We steer clear of smart offices, and reject the excesses of many large conservation organisations. We keep office and administration costs to a minimum, with staff living and working alongside local community members wherever possible.

As a mission-driven organisation, with an exciting vision for our innovations to benefit 1 million of the world’s poorest coastal people by 2015, we count on strategic and unrestricted investment in order to be able to pursue new opportunities for networking communities and supporting partners to drive adoption of our models.

Many of our staff are based in remote and rugged locations, where these essential work tools tend to take a lot of wear. As a result, we are always happy to accept used laptops or mobile phones in good working condition for our field-based teams. Smartphones are particularly welcome, as we use these for collecting scientific data in the field. Please contact us for more information.

We rebuild tropical fisheries with the poorest coastal communities

Blue Ventures is a science-led social enterprise that works with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation.

We work in places where the ocean is vital to local people, cultures and economies, and where there is a fundamental need to support human development.

"A model for everyone working to conserve the natural life-support systems of our troubled planet."
Sir David Attenborough - Renowned naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of the BBC's Madagascar series

Making conservation make economic sense

Over the last decade our models have guided national fisheries policy and been replicated by communities, NGOs, businesses, donors and government agencies along thousands of kilometres of coastline.

We have created the largest locally managed marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean, catalysed a sea change in community-led fisheries management, established sustainable aquaculture and ecotourism businesses, and developed new approaches to financing and incentivising marine conservation.

So far our work has impacted the lives of more than 100,000 of the world’s poorest coastal people.

Find out more about what we do and how we work.

david-attenborough-2-sized"We are redefining conservation by pioneering and scaling market-based solutions that work for local communities."
Lalao Aigrette - IUCN natural-born hero and senior marine scientist for Blue Ventures in Madagascar

Scaling success

Once we have developed a model that works, we support communities to share their experiences and encourage adoption by others. The results of our work help us to propose new ways of safeguarding marine biodiversity and traditional livelihoods that benefit coastal people everywhere.

smallshellWe move our programmes through a research and development lifecycle, in which models are pioneered and refined, then tested at scale before being handed over to local partners. At every state we monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of each model, developing tools to share best practice and support broader adoption by partners in other coastal regions.

We disseminate what we learn through publications, films, peer networks, conferences and workshops. From the mechanics of blue carbon to the complexities of PHE, we provide technical advice and training to communities and organisations worldwide. By bringing together fishing communities, we also build grassroots marine conservation movements at national and regional levels.

Join us

Our work has won international acclaim for its innovative and integrated approach to conservation and development.

Through our expeditions, volunteers from around the world join our teams in the field, working closely with local communities and conservation scientists on marine research.
