Blue Ventures Carbon Offset (BVCO) is an exciting new not-for-profit carbon offsetting programme. BVCO works in Madagascar to reduce carbon emissions with projects that benefit both communities and the environment. None of these projects would go ahead without BVCO's support. All projects reduce future carbon dioxide emissions and deliver real economic, environmental and health benefits to some of the world’s poorest and most isolated communities.

Current programmes include distribution of both solar and energy-efficient stoves in subsistence communities in southern Madagascar.  These stoves dramatically reduce wood use and associated deforestation, as well as the time and money expended by families in gathering fuel wood. Offsetting in the News - 13/08/07

Reuter's recent article on Carbon Offsetting in Africa highlights the dearth of projects operating on the continent. BVCO is one of the few organisations supporting a sustainable development offset in Africa.

'Africa has seen just 21 out of a total of 751 CDM projects officially registered with the U.N. climate change secretariat.' states Reuters. Energy Efficiency in Cooking: Distributing fuel efficient stoves to villages and providing a sustainable infrastructure for the continued local production and development of these stoves.

Mangrove protection: Mangroves are essential carbon stores. The SW coast of Madagascar has extensive reserves, many of which are being threatened with development. Protecting these areas can prevent carbon release that would otherwise occur.
