Cicelin Rakotomahazo

Socioeconomic Scientist Socioeconomic Scientist Toliara, Madagascar

During his two years of Masters training at Madagascar's National Marine Research Institute, IHSM (Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines), Cicelin undertook an internship with Blue Ventures' community-based aquaculture project in the Velondriake locally-managed marined area (LMMA). For his Masters in Applied Oceanology, Cicelin studied the environmental factors influencing the growth and health of farmed red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii.

While Cicelin studied the environmental factors affecting aquaculture, he became increasingly aware of and interested in the socioeconomic aspects of environmental management and conservation. Motivated to continue his studies, Cicelin has recently started a PhD fellowship with the Blue Forests project. The aim of his work is to establish socioeconomic baselines using participatory approaches and assessing the socioeconomic impacts of mangrove conservation and mangrove forest carbon projects.
