We rebuild tropical fisheries with the poorest coastal communities

Blue Ventures is a science-led social enterprise that works with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation.

We work in places where the ocean is vital to local people, cultures and economies, and where there is a fundamental need to support human development.

Making conservation make economic sense

Over the last decade our models have guided national fisheries policy and been replicated by communities, NGOs, businesses, donors and government agencies along thousands of kilometres of coastline.

We have created the largest locally managed marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean, catalysed a sea change in community-led fisheries management, established sustainable aquaculture and ecotourism businesses, and developed new approaches to financing and incentivising marine conservation.

So far our work has impacted the lives of more than 200,000 of the world’s poorest coastal people.

Scaling success

Once we have developed a model that works, we support communities to share their experiences and encourage adoption by others. The results of our work help us to propose new ways of safeguarding marine biodiversity and traditional livelihoods that benefit coastal people everywhere.

smallshellWe move our programmes through a research and development lifecycle, in which models are pioneered and refined, then tested at scale before being handed over to local partners. At every state we monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of each model, developing tools to share best practice and support broader adoption by partners in other coastal regions.

We disseminate what we learn through publications, films, peer networks, conferences and workshops. From the mechanics of blue carbon to the complexities of PHE, we provide technical advice and training to communities and organisations worldwide. By bringing together fishing communities, we also build grassroots marine conservation movements at national and regional levels.

Join us

Our work has won international acclaim for its innovative and integrated approach to conservation and development.

Through our expeditions, volunteers from around the world join our teams in the field, working closely with local communities and conservation scientists on marine research.
